Behavioral and physiological methods for early quantitative assessment of spinal cord injury and prognosis in rats BJMBR
Giglio,C.A.; Defino,H.L.A.; da-Silva,C.A.; de-Souza,A.S.; Del Bel,E.A..
Methods for reliable evaluation of spinal cord (SC) injury in rats at short periods (2 and 24 h) after lesion were tested to characterize the mechanisms implicated in primary SC damage. We measured the physiological changes occurring after several procedures for producing SC injury, with particular emphasis on sensorimotor functions. Segmental and suprasegmental reflexes were tested in 39 male Wistar rats weighing 250-300 g divided into three control groups that were subjected to a) anesthesia, b) dissection of soft prevertebral tissue, and c) laminectomy of the vertebral segments between T10 and L1. In the lesion group the SC was completely transected, hemisected or subjected to vertebral compression. All animals were evaluated 2 and 24 h after the...

Corticosteroids in acute respiratory distress syndrome BJMBR
Fernandes,A.B.S.; Zin,W.A.; Rocco,P.R.M..
Improving the course and outcome of patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome presents a challenge. By understanding the immune status of a patient, physicians can consider manipulating proinflammatory systems more rationally. In this context, corticosteroids could be a therapeutic tool in the armamentarium against acute respiratory distress syndrome. Corticosteroid therapy has been studied in three situations: prevention in high-risk patients, early treatment with high-dose, short-course therapy, and prolonged therapy in unresolving cases. There are differences between the corticosteroid trials of the past and recent trials: today, treatment starts 2-10 days after disease onset in patients that failed to improve; in the past, the corticosteroid...

Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathies: A Morphometric Overview International Journal of Morphology
Fazan,Valéria Paula Sassoli; Vasconcelos,Carlos Augusto Carvalho de; Valença,Marcelo Moraes; Nessler,Randy; Moore,Kenneth Charles.
Diabetes is now considered one of the main threats to human health in the 21st century and many researchers are dedicated to investigate the physiopathology of the disease, with further insights on the managements of its major complications. Since understanding the pathophysiology of the major complications of diabetes and their underlying processes is mandatory, experimental models of the disease may be useful as they allow the recognition of the early mechanisms involved in the long-term complications of diabetes. Peripheral nerve involvement is highly frequent in diabetes mellitus and it has been documented that one third of diabetic patients have peripheral neuropathy. The true prevalence is not known and reports vary from 10% to 90% in diabetic...

Impact of malnutrition on immunity and infection J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
França,TGD; Ishikawa,LLW; Zorzella-Pezavento,SFG; Chiuso-Minicucci,F; da Cunha,MLRS; Sartori,A.
Malnutrition may be a consequence of energy deficit or micronutrient deficiency. It is considered the most relevant risk factor for illness and death, particularly in developing countries. In this review we described the magnitude of this problem, as well as its direct effect on the immune system and how it results in higher susceptibility to infections. A special emphasis was given to experimental models used to investigate the relationship between undernutrition and immunity. Malnutrition is obviously a challenge that must be addressed to health authorities and the scientific community.

Zika virus congenital syndrome: experimental models and clinical aspects J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Polonio,Carolina Manganeli; Freitas,Carla Longo de; Zanluqui,Nagela Ghabdan; Peron,Jean Pierre Schatzmann.
Abstract Viral infections have long been the cause of severe diseases to humans, increasing morbidity and mortality rates worldwide, either in rich or poor countries. Yellow fever virus, H1N1 virus, HIV, dengue virus, hepatitis B and C are well known threats to human health, being responsible for many million deaths annually, associated to a huge economic and social cost. In this context, a recently introduced flavivirus in South America, called Zika virus (ZIKV), led the WHO to declare in February 1st 2016 a warning on Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). ZIKV is an arbovirus of the Flaviviridae family firstly isolated from sentinels Rhesus sp. monkeys at the Ziika forest in Uganda, Africa, in 1947. Lately, the virus has well adapted...
